This is what the terrain looked like for much of the day, but the shoulder on the road was much narrower.  One of our group is a geologist, so we have a mini- rock debriefing at day's end to get the scoop on what we saw that day.  This stuff is all volcanic.  We also passed directly over the San Andreas Fault yesterday, near the Chocolate Mountains.
